Open Letters
Open Letters to President Clinton

11/4/98, Winter Harbor, Maine

Regarding telling the truth.

I've put myself in your place a few times, as well as your predecessors. It's a little game I play, "King for a Day". And, I keep coming back to the same advice the nuns handed out repeatedly in grade school: they preached "honesty is the best policy".

I first must admit that I haven't found any of your speeches to be particularly insightful, going back even to the pre '92 election. It's something in your body language that seems contrived, the timing of the little pout perhaps, or maybe, you ALWAYS just seem to be in the right place at the right time with the right words. ALWAYS. Like the Carley Simon song "You're so Vain" of years ago. And there you were again today, at the Cape, watching the shuttle and John Glenn.

So, yes, now that you as president and me as a citizen find ourselves in quite a mess, I'm not quite as objective as I should be. I find myself looking at your misdeeds and cheering a bit. Like I picked the right team on a hunch. Then my good citizen conscience jumps in with, "now Jon, this is hardly professional or fair, which is what you must be for such an important issue".

Well now Mr. President, your incessant, apparently life long pursuit of poontang, certainly has brought you to the edge hasn't it ? Do I see that tendency in myself ? Yup ! Have I been able to manage it to avoid hurting those I love the most ? Yup ! Should the people of the United States expect their president to (manage)? Yup ! Does lying about personal mistakes spill over into ones business life? It certainly can, and in your case Mr. President, because you have been so successful, for so long, at lying about this particular aspect of your personal life, I believe you have used the same techniques in your political life. And oh boy, are you good at it, that's the scary part. But, "practice makes perfect".

But then, don't we American's deserve just what we have? Half of us don't vote, and the half that does, votes their pocket book.

So Mr. President, now that the impeachment process has started (and I wish it hadn't, because I truly believe the best would have been for all concerned for you to resign) but now that the process has started, and the country is being dragged through this mess, it is my opiniion that you MUST BE REMOVED FROM OFFICE FORCIBLY. We simply have to draw the line. It's not the end of your life, but rather an opportunity for you to set the rest of it right. And America will do just fine without you as president. We, yourself included, deserve better.

Jon G. Kuhl, Winter Harbor, Maine
