Los Angeles, CA
Dear Congress,
I generally vote as a Democrat though I have at times voted for Republican candidates when I have felt they might better serve the interests of my city, state or country.
Over the past many weeks, subsequent to Kenneth Starr's referral to Congress recommending impeachment of the President, I have searched my soul in an effort to truly approach this process with an open mind. Though I believe that Mr. Clinton has done an admirable job as our President, I am nonetheless disgusted by his apparent short-sightedness with respect to the potential impact on us all by his behavior.
Even so, as I listen to the current impeachment hearings I am disgusted and horrified at the prospect that you seem about to vote to overturn the election and impeach the President, and in so doing drag this country through an embarrassing and ultimately destructive trial insuring that the truly important business of government will not be addressed.
I believe that it is apparent to most Americans that these charges and the manner in which they have been addressed are trivial, the result of entrapment, and have no real bearing on the President's ability to govern this country as he has for the past six years.
I believe that we are all disgraced by the bilious and vindictive behavior of many members of Congress during these hearings, which so obviously serve only their own narrow political interest and in no way reflect consideration of the horrible impact which this process, continued, will have on this country.
If you do vote to impeach this President, to send this to the Senate for trial, you must know that your motives are obvious to most Americans and will not be forgotten. If this process ends in a vote to impeach our President, I for one will do everything in my power to mobilize everyone I know to bring to an end your "service" to our country. Do the right thing before it is too late for all of us.
Sincerely,
Daniel Phillips
