Dear Mr. Hyde,
I have been a Republican since the first day that I registered to vote when I turned 18. That was 19 years ago. I worked for the Reagan and Bush campaigns. However, I have recently decided that the Republicans have developed an agenda that is not beneficial for the country. Your actions, words and statements in regarding impeachment lead me to believe that you do not have the country's best interests in mind. You have a political agenda that YOU feel is the right one for the country without representation of the people who elected you. You are supposed to represent our interests. But over the last 4-8 years, we elect you based on the views and stands you present us - and then after you get elected you do what YOU think is best. That is not what the founders of this country had in mind. If you were truly public servants, you would do what we want. You have turned into self-serving politicians who only advance your own agendas and those of the people who contribute the most dollars to your campaign.
As for the current situation with impeachment, I don't believe that it would be best for the country for Mr. Clinton to be impeached. While I didn't vote for him in the last two elections and he did lie, he did it to cover up the same actions you yourself committed in your earlier life. And after all, didn't you lie about it by not letting your wife, family and the country know for 20 years? And didn't you take an oath of office to "uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America", the very same oath the President took? And by lying about your adultery after you took the oath, haven't you yourself committed a form a perjury? You are so worried that the image of the President as a person who lied under oath is so bad for the country. How do you think the country views a Congress composed of adulterers and liars? You and the other Republicans, members of my own party, have become a gang of hypocritical political liars. You have disgraced the face of American politics as much as you claim the President has. You cannot pass judgement on the President for his actions if you do not also pass judgement on yourselves.
To close, I will tell you this: as a proud Republican for the past 19 years, I will do everything I can to get you and your colleagues out of office if you move forward with a vote to impeach the President. I will start by changing my party affiliation and try to convince my family and friends to do the same. Then I will work on campaigns to get you and your colleagues out of office in the next election. If you were concerned about the seats lost by Republicans in the November election, you should be much more concerned come November 2000. The only way I would support your impeachment vote is if you also impeach every member of Congress who has lied under their oath of office, as well as the President. The only problem with that is there would be no one left in Congress to try the cases.
