11/5/98
Dear President Clinton (and everybody else),
I grew up in the Washington DC metro area and I am used to being aware of what goes wrong in Washington. I am 35 years old and became politically aware during the Watergate hearings. My whole adult life has been in an era of mistrusting our Government. I didn't trust Carter, Reagan, or Bush. And now I don't trust you.
In the past, it has been a matter of deciphering the media reports and figuring out who is right and who is wrong. What is unbelievable about this political scandal is that it isn't a matter of figuring out who is right and who is wrong. They are all wrong!!!
Therefore I don't think one letter to one person is enough. I need to address each player in this political soap opera.
Dear Kenneth Starr: You were wrong to pursue our President beyond what was assigned to you. Our country didn't give you a mandate to hunt him down at any expense. You wasted so much tax money on your personal vendetta that you should be sued and held financially accountable for your self-mandated presidential stalking.
Dear President Clinton: I am a married woman with one daughter and President Clinton, you were wrong. You are a lousy husband and a horrible example to your daughter. I do feel you have been a good president but I can't understand how you could be so smart and then do such a dumb thing. You are obviously as morally corrupt as everyone else involved in this scandal. This is a big disappointment. You let a lot of people down.
Dear Monica Lewinsky: You, unfortunately, are a younger extension of your Mother (aren't we all?). She is as guilty as you are. I can't help but hold her responsible for all of this. Was she encouraging you? Considering her career, I can't help but feel that a scandal was her goal all along. I hope that both of you will somehow be held accountable for your actions.
Dear Hillary Clinton: I know that you haven't had blinders on. He's a bum. As soon as his term is up, hand over the divorce papers and get a life of your own.
Dear Chelsea Clinton: Don't go by your dad's definition of a sexual relationship. Seriously, being a responsible adult is no fun and every once in a while we all crack up and do something really dumb. Don't hold on to the anger for too long. It doesn't accomplish anything and it causes you pain.
In conclusion, I think having your sex life blasted all over the world via the Internet is punishment enough. President Clinton, please keep your zipper up for the rest of your term so we can move on to more important issues.
Sincerely,
Laurie Minor-Penland
