Graham asked: "Have we lost the ability for discourse in this country? The political leaders (most on both sides) posture themselves, usually in front of an audience that agrees with them and it appears the population follows this example. How do you improve discussion in this environment?"
Jim responded that the internet is helping improve public discourse, but that there must also be a return to personal responsibility and acceptance of "the other side of the story."
So my question to the group is: how can we improve public discourse? How can we stop shouting at each other all the time, approaching every "conversation" as though it is a battle that must be won? What can we do to listen more respectfully to differing opinions or to people from different backgrounds and experiences, and realize that just because someone doesn't share our opinion does not mean that their belief is not valid? How can we better listen and understand?
What are your opinions on this matter? (this thread also relates to the topic of accountability that was brought up under the education and media responsibility threads...)
I'd also be interested to know if any one in this group has had any experience with the process of deliberation or deliberative forums.
