Education & Public Discourse (2 posts)

1. Education & Public Discourse

This group, and its exchange, is one of the strengths of Reality Check. I am thinking, as those of us who facilitate system design seminars say, "outside the box." I have thought of myself as an outside-the-box thinker for a long time, but these past days have shown me that I keep one foot in it.

I didn't appreciate McRostie's post #21 under Education. To be more specific, I didn't think the second paragraph was fair. But, as I thought about it, there came acceptance that he is entitled, and at least partially right. In his introduction, he states that he tends to be picky about the definition of words. I am also, and I am equally picky about the choice of words. Some words carry connotations beyond their meaning. I try not to use words that carry negative connotations, but am, as always and in every endeavor, only partially successful.

But, leaving that where it is, he, Graham, eireann, and others have raised some important questions, and/or topics for discussion. Listing some of them:

1. Social Security
2. Medicare/Medicare/Aging Population
3. Health Care
4. School vouchers
5. Taxing Policies
6. Federal vs Local funding of Education
7. National education standards
8. Leaders contributing to public discourse
- ML King and George Wallace
9. The Independent Council, and the law that formed it
10. Conservatism/Libertarian - misers?
11. Economics
12. etc. more to come

Let us discuss, face to face, improving the state of discourse as we go.

Thanks,

Jim
